Is It Supposed to Look Like That?

How many of us have seen DIY projects on cable TV shows, Instagram and Pinterest and thought, “Yeah, I can do that!”? With the goal of doing the project cheaper and quicker, only to find out that that’s not the case.  Something that looked so easy ends up being a huge colossal disaster.  Not to mention you looked at million YouTube videos to figure out how the project was done! Argh!!!!

Well, have no fear you are not alone.

I know I have made my share of “What’s that supposed to be?” kinda art. My response is always, “What do you think is it?” and go with that.  (Martha Stewert makes everything look so easy.)  So let’s beg the question.  Yeah, we tried to do some kind of epic DIY art or craft project and had an epic fail.  However, working outside your medium of choice is a great way to grow as an artist.  Learning about different mediums brings an understanding of others’ craft. We can appreciate the hard work and labor that comes with all mediums and reflect on our experiences.  It’s like continuing education.  We have to continuously learn and update our skills, or we become obsolete.  As artists, we learn new techniques, develop new tools, grow in our communities, sharing our ideas and thoughts which shape our lives in our collective society.

So go ahead make those epic fails, learn from those mistakes, and grow as artists.  You might just surprise yourself that you discover a new method, technique or art form! Have fun exploring a new DIY project or working with that new medium.  If art imitates life than art is about the journey, not the destination.
